Robert 's Story

Updated in December 2020 After graduation I went to the U of Utah for one year and then went on a mission (Spanish American Mission) for two and a half years. One of my close high school friends, Oliveira Pereira (from Brazil) served in the same mission and was a year ahead of me. I last saw him as I was serving in McAllen, Texas in May of 1964 where he was married and serving as the Branch President. After my mission, I went back to the U and graduated with a BA in Spanish and a minor in Biology. I married LeVon O'Keefe from Seattle, Washington on August 19, 1966. I met her when I hit her with a golf ball at Paul's Par Three in Hunter. She was visiting her grandmother who lived next to the golf course. After graduation from the U in 1967, I taught school in Seldovia, Alaska for one year and then went back to Utah so I could continue my education. During the time I worked on my Masters Degree by taking evening classes at the U of U, I taught at Kearns Jr. High for one year and then was hired by Glen Smith (my old High School History teacher) who was the principal of Kearns Jr. High. He was named to be the new principal to open John F. Kennedy Jr. High. He hired me to be a Spanish Teacher. I remained at JFK for about 8 years and then moved to McMinnville, Oregon where I worked in Migrant Education. After four years I finally made it to Washington and taught school for 22 years until I retired in 2005. I taught for a total of 35 years. I taught Spanish at Snohomish High Schoo...Expand for more
l for the last 21 years of my career. When I retired, My daughter, her husband, and my wife and I, bought a digital copy and printing shop in Monroe, WA where we continue to work (although as of 2017 only as needed). You can check out our business at monroecopy.com. I have five children and four grandchildren. Most of them live within a few miles of my home. Politically I am conservative and am active in my church. For 7 years I served as a volunteer sponsor at the Monroe Correctional Center where I conducted church meetings for the prisoners. After being released from the prison calling I have served as the Executive Secretary in the Spanish-speaking branch of my church for the past 7 years. For the past 13 years we have lived in the foothills of the Cascade mountains on 7 acres of mostly forested land where we have raised chickens and developed a large garden. Now that I am 78, I am starting to cut way back on working on the land and spend more time enjoying my family and hobbies (oil painting, woodworking, fishing, birdwatching, and working on my 67 Ford truck and 7 tractors). So far only my eldest son has had Covid-19 and fortunately, we didn't get it, even though we were working together. Last Summer (2022) my wife and I got Covid twice. The symptoms were very mild. On June 28, 2023 I came down with Covid and then the next day, my wife and the next day, my son. Joseph got it. This time it was much worse and I finally tested negative this morning, July 11, 2023.
